February is LGBT+ History Month!
Everyone has the right to be educated in a safe environment and as a college, we promote equality, safety and visibility in education for LGBT people.
We want everyone to be aware that people have multiple, complex and diverse identities which shape the world and make history. We teach our students about the variety of the human race, and stress that humans may adopt several different identities at any one point in their lives.
This month Havering Colleges is celebrating LGBT+ History Month. The aim of the event is to primarily teach young people about the history of the gay rights movement and to promote an inclusive modern society. It recognises the LGBT+ community in all their diversity, and in doing so, educates out prejudice.
There will be a variety of events during the month, such as tutorials in coaching sessions giving students more information about LGBT+ History Month and the Enrichment teams at each of our campuses are providing resources and links to support groups.
Students are also being given information about live free events, including webinars and talks, from organisations such as The Prince’s Trust, the National Maritime Museum and SASH.
One talk organised by the LGBT Foundation discusses 5 top tips to help people feel more comfortable with how/when/whether to ask people their pronouns, and what to do if they make a mistake.
SASH are also holding a confidential and relaxed meeting space for LGBTQ+ young people on zoom where they can ask questions anonymously.
