Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award presentation

Seven students were presented with their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards during a special meeting attended by College Governors, parents and senior staff.

The students, Emmanuella Agyapong, Ivy Masiga, Sabeehah Saleq, Keerthanna Kesannolla, Danny Hill, Alex Hillyard and Mitchell Perry, were given certificates for completing all sections of the Silver Award by Principal Paul Wakeling.

He said: “These students thoroughly deserve the award and have shown great tenacity and courage in their success. They are a credit to themselves and to the College.”

Faculty Leader Brian Martin, who runs the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at College, said all seven students had demonstrated commitment and dedication.

“To achieve the award, the students had to complete 6 to 12 months on the three sections - Physical, where they have to say, attend a gym, swim regularly or take part in team sports; Skills, where they have to either learn a new skill or improve an existing one, and Volunteering, where they give up their time on a regular basis to help those in need, such as the elderly or a charity.

“They also had to complete two separate expeditions, each camping out for two nights and navigating their way across country for three days carrying their rucksacks. We held very successful expeditions in the South Downs, the New Forest and the Purbeck Hills in Dorset.”

The students agreed that taking part in the scheme had helped them overcome adversity, gain self-confidence and had challenged them individually.

As recognition of the College’s efforts to widen participation in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, Principal Paul Wakeling and Faculty Leader Brian Martin have been invited to attend the celebrations for the 60th Anniversary of the DofE scheme at Buckingham Palace on Monday 16th May.

They will be presented with a special plaque acknowledging Havering Sixth Form College’s commitment to running the DofE Award and thanking them for giving young people the opportunity to transform their lives. They will attend a buffet lunch in the gardens of Buckingham Palace and meet with the scheme’s patrons, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH The Earl of Wessex and HRH The Countess of Wessex.
