Official opening of state-of-the-art Chemistry labs

Two new state-of-the-art science labs for 21st century Chemistry teaching were officially opened at Havering Sixth Form College after a successful bid to the Wolfson Foundation secured £100,000 funding for the project.

The opening ceremony followed news that the college’s A Level Chemistry results this year were in the top 10% in the UK.

Principal Paul Wakeling welcomed Paul Ramsbottom, CEO of the Wolfson Foundation, to formally open the bright spacious labs with new prep room and to meet science students as they carried out a practical experiment.

As part of the opening ceremony, student Shaye Wettner was presented with a trophy for achieving the highest mark in College in his AS Chemistry exam in the summer.

Shaye said after he was presented with his award that the new labs were more inspiring for students and had the ‘wow factor’ when students first saw them.

Paul Wakeling said: “Wolfson do some fantastic work in sponsoring excellence in science and we are delighted that our bid for funding was granted. We are the largest provider of science in London and the refurbishment of these two labs and the prep room in between has ensured we are able to offer state-of-the-art, industry standard science labs along with our fantastic science teachers.”

The bid was created by Science Faculty Leader Marianne Knott and Assistant Principal Sue Bannocks. They used data and student feedback to articulate what was needed and worked together with Assistant Principal Andrew Frater and Premises Manager Rowan Smith to bring the project to reality.

Wolfson’s CEO Paul Ramsbottom was impressed with what he saw in the science area and also with the College as a whole.

He said: “I am delighted to be here and thrilled to see that our funding has helped create these labs which are of such a high standard. It has been a pleasure to meet the science students and I am pleased to formally and officially open the Wolfson Labs.”

The labs were designed and built by Commercial Design & Build Ltd, based in Kent. Managing Director Steve Anstee said they had worked hard over the summer to complete the project. He added: “Most of the work you can’t actually see – it is in the infrastructure, under the floor and in the walls. We are very pleased with the results and the project was completed on time and within budget.”
