College links up with Indonesian school for Island Fusions cultural arts project

An ambitious project for Performing Arts and Creative Media students to link up with a school in Indonesia is underway at Havering Sixth Form College.

Titled Island Fusions, the initiative will create the opportunity for a cross-cultural exchange between our students and talented young dancers, musicians and theatre performers from the High School for Performing Arts (SMKI) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

To mark the start of the project, the Cultural Attaché from the Indonesian Embassy, Professor Aminudin Aziz, visited the College this week and was taken on a tour of the Creative Media Faculty, talking to students and being shown our music and drama facilities.

He met with Principal Paul Wakeling, Creative Arts Faculty Leader Brian Martin and Sarah Stuchfield, a local music teacher who has worked in Indonesia and is co-ordinating and developing the project, see photo above

Sarah believes the initiative, which will also involve Havering Music School, will challenge and change the lives and aspirations of young performers by giving them the opportunity to understand life and learning from each other’s perspective.

It is hoped the students from Indonesia will visit the UK for three weeks later this year and will work with Havering Sixth Form College students, attending lessons in music, dance and drama. The visit will culminate in a collaborative end of project performance which will be shared with the wider community.

Sarah said: “The project will open up new opportunities for understanding and interaction between the young people of the two nations. For the Indonesian students they will have the unique experience of sampling life in a UK college which will enhance their English language skills.”

Brian said: “For our students this ground-breaking union will be an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of a performing arts tradition from another culture and it will also enhance their collaboration and leadership skills.”
