Celebrations as students receive excellent A Level results

Students were celebrating fantastic A Level results at Havering Sixth Form College today.

The overall A Level pass rate increased to 96.6% - higher than it has been in the last six years.

Seven students have gained places to study Medicine and one student will be going to Cambridge University.

Passes at A* and A, high grades A*-B and A*-C have also risen and there has been a significant improvement in Level 3 BTEC results.

The majority of our courses achieved 100% pass rates with nearly all achieving pass rates in excess of 90%.

Top student Jordan Wilson, formerly of Gaynes School, achieved an amazing 3 A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and will go on to study a Masters in Maths at Warwick University. He said: “I was really surprised when I saw my results! It has been hard work but it has been worth it for these grades. I’ve had a great time at College, the teachers have been exceptional and I’ve found it has been a really lovely environment here.”

Charlie Innes will take a gap year before studying Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Cambridge University. Charlie was Chair of the Student Council and was very involved with the College Community, giving much of his spare time to help improve the College for fellow students.

Principal Paul Wakeling was thrilled with the results saying he was proud of the students and staff for such a great achievement.

He said: “Once again, I am delighted to announce excellent outcomes for our students in 2018. Our overall A Level pass rate, passes at A* and A, high grades A*-B and A-C are again higher than last year and this is part of a six-year improvement trend.

“We have a 96.6% overall pass rate, 11.2% of students achieved A*-A, 33.3% of students achieved A*-B, 64% of students achieved A*-C and the majority of our courses achieved pass rates of 100%.

“A Level subjects where students made better than expected progress, measured against national benchmarks, include many of the facilitating subjects favoured by the Russell Group Universities: Chemistry, Biology, History, French, Spanish and also Computer Science, English Language and Literature, Dance, Psychology, Geology, Accounting, Government and Politics, Business, Film Studies and the arts – Textiles, Photography, Graphics, Architecture & Interior Design, and Fine Art.

“Many of our students now study predominantly vocational courses and we are also delighted to report that the results were up once again with 61% of full-time vocational students achieving a triple distinction and 87% achieving at least one distinction.

“Havering Sixth Form College welcomes students of all abilities and offers a very broad curriculum - 35 A Levels and 70 courses in total with a wide and growing range of enrichments and work-related opportunities - and we are pleased that we enjoy success across that broad offer.

“In addition, we are expecting that in the region of 700 students will once again be progressing to university and we are expecting that our pattern of 10% of students going to Russell Group universities, will continue.

“A significant number of our students will be embarking on superb employment opportunities maintaining our record on achieving high quality destinations for all of our students.

“We are very proud of this achievement for both our students and staff that will contribute towards our mission to be recognised regionally and nationally, as a centre of excellence for high quality education, social inclusion and outstanding progression for our students.”

Eight of our students will begin studying degrees in Medicine in September 2018 after achieving excellent results to secure a place at Medical School.

David Lipinskas (King’s College), Lia Racovita (East Anglia), Ryan Tennyson (East Anglia), Precious Anekwe (Bristol), Abigail Opoku Amankwaah (Southampton), Joseph Plant (East Anglia), Barbarah Darkwa (University of Bologna) and Dorin Iftinca (Exeter - who received his results in 2017 and took a gap year), were all successful in their applications.

David, pictured right, who achieved A*, A* A in Maths, Biology and Chemistry, said: “The Medics enrichment group was very useful. I enjoyed it and it helped a lot with my Medicine application. I worked hard to get the grades and didn’t give up.”
