College taster days inspire school pupils to Aim High

Almost 100 most able pupils from local secondary schools took part in Aiming High Taster Days at Havering Sixth Form College.

The two stretch-and-challenge days for high achievers from partner schools gave the Year 10 and 11 students the chance to experience specialist teaching as well as gain an insight into future opportunities, such as access to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities.

Schools including Bower Park, Emerson Park, Hall Mead, Marshalls Park, Hornchurch High and Royal Liberty brought along their top pupils to attend interactive sessions at the College titled Imagination & Speculation, Thinking Logically, Higher Order Thinking Skills, Thinking Ahead and A Historical Moral Question.

These were led by experienced tutors and were designed to challenge, stimulate and develop deeper understanding. Some of the lessons involved group debates on philosophical dilemmas and others involved puzzle and problem-solving. A session in the College’s newly refurbished Library also gave the pupils an insight into the range of books and resources available.

The schools were taken on a tour of the College by Havering Sixth Form Student Ambassadors.

The Aiming High initiative was led by Assistant Principal Sue Bannocks. She said: “Working alongside our partner schools we hope that these sessions have helped raise the aspirations of students across the borough. We pride ourselves here on facilitating excellent progression for all our students. We have a strong record of students achieving at the very highest level and progressing to the very best universities and we are extending that work.”

In feedback, 100% of the students who attended strongly agreed or agreed that they had enjoyed their day.

Mr Ben Dowsey, from Marshalls Park School, said: “The sessions were all very good. Our pupils have really benefited from today.”

And Kelly Porter, from Bower Park Academy, said: “Thank you to Havering Sixth Form College for giving our pupils such a great day - I thought it was really well planned and the staff and sessions were really good.”
