USA trip beckons for students selected as UK ambassadors

A fantastic trip to the USA this summer awaits Havering Sixth Form College students Tedy Sam and James Stockwell who have both been selected from hundreds of other young people to be ambassadors for the UK.

Tedy, 17, and James, 17, were chosen for the Hummer Tuttle Foundation and Windsor Fellowship’s UK-US Youth Dialogue Programme and as part of the scheme, they will stay in Virginia and then in Chicago with an American family.

It is a superb achievement for the boys, as there were only 12 places available and they were selected from applicants at many other schools and colleges all over London and the South East.

Tedy, right, from Dagenham, who is studying A Levels in Geography, Maths and Physics, said: “I’ve never been to America before so I am really looking forward to it. It’s a great opportunity for me to meet other people of my age from all different places and backgrounds.”

James, below, from Hornchurch and a former pupil at Sanders School, is studying A Levels in History, Government & Politics and French. He said: “It’s a chance to do something different and on my UCAS form it will make me stand out from other university applicants, I hope.”

The UK-US Youth Dialogue Programme has been designed to educate and develop young Londoners to grow into well-rounded, informed young adults. It aims to improve leadership, confidence and communication skills and many students who have been on the programme in the past have called it an ‘experience of a lifetime’.

There are various residential seminars in the UK that they will attend leading up to the trip to the USA, where the students will stay at the School for International Training campus in Virginia in the first week, and will then experience a home stay with a family for the second week. The visit culminates in the group giving a presentation in front of the UK Ambassador.

The College’s CUBE Manager Nikki Phelps said: “This is a fantastic opportunity and a major achievement to be selected, so we are very proud of them.”
