Students win prize in New Music Friday competition run by Radio 1 and the V&A Museum

Two Graphics students were chosen as finalists in a nationwide competition to launch a social media campaign run by Radio 1 and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Amber Punter and Romy Backler’s campaign was judged to be one of the best four from hundreds of entries – and they won the overall Audience Prize.
Two other pairs of Havering Sixth Form College students were shortlisted - Aria Mystek with Milena Ramos and Chantelle Juin with Seher Sohail - and won Highly Commended awards for their work.
The competition was organised between the radio station and the museum and was a ‘live’ project which aimed to find the best social media campaign to promote New Music Friday, which is when new music is released and added to the Radio 1 playlist.
All students aged 15 to 18, up and down the country, were invited to take part in the competition and all lower sixth A Level Graphics groups were entered by the College as part of their coursework.
Students went along to the V&A Museum in October to hear about the project and then in the months that followed, devised campaigns which they had to pitch in a five-minute presentation to a Radio 1 judging panel and an audience, at the end of January.
Our winning pair’s work was a GIF which consisted of various images – drawings and photographs - of a girl enjoying the music. The images flashed up quickly and were very vibrant, the idea being deliberately multi-coloured and chaotic.
Their work cannot be shown until it is displayed on Radio 1’s and the V&A's websites and social media in April.
Radio 1 DJ Adele Roberts presented the finalists with their awards after their pitch was chosen as one of the winners by the judging panel on the night.
